‘Dune: Part Two’, explained ending of Denis Villeneuve’s overwhelming show and how it leaves the door open to an adaptation of ‘The Messiah of Dune’

Dune: Part Two’ Ending Explained: The Rise of Paul Atreides and What’s Next

The second installment of Dune Part 2, Paul Atreides: Arrakis’ chief protagonist has finally been released and is expected to be the greatest film in most blockbuster movies for the year of 2024. The epic lumber of Denis Villeneuve who was behind the film’s adaptation of Frank Herbert novel challenges the audience visually and narratively with Greig Fraser’s cinematography and the technical talent of the medals as the audience is placed right on the sands of the planet Arrakis.

*Dune Part Two* focuses on Paul Atreides’ story arc which is surrounded by majestic storytelling but viewers may still be left feeling with a few questions. If you are wondering about the ending or any significant events, don’t worry, we have got you sorted. (Note: Spoilers follow, if you have not seen Dune, I suggest you come back later.)

And to those asking ‘what happens after the credits’ Dune: Part Two does not have a scene after the credits and no you can just stand up after almost three hours and enjoy the relief of an overfilled bladder.

### Paul’s Transformation: From Hero to Tyrant

The first installment of Dune follows the story of the fall of House Atreides and after the tragic event, Paul Atreides has to overcome two ‘hallucinations’ while living among the Fremen tribe. The first vision helps him gain the trust of the non-believers by assisting in the elimination of Harkonnen’s spice mining operations.

Hence, the prophecy of *Lisan al Gaib* the savior of Arrakis gave him first among all the Fremen led by Stilgar.

It is well stated in the comments that Paul was becoming amongst the leaders of the Arrakis rebellion and was shown in visions and dreams. He now sees that in order to achieve his revenge on the Harkonnens and the Emperor, he must travel further south to a place embroiled in chaos and dilapidation. However, he chooses to accept the worst as it is.

### A Dark Turn

The aliens had begun to be led by Paul’s cousin Feyd-Rautha whose mental condition was questionable, and the aliens were trying everything to extinguish the fight of the Fremen. In this light, Paul moves towards the southern parts and in those parts he gets to be in the good graces of the most extreme elements within the society of Arrakis, after having fully reversed the biological alteration process that turned his mother into a Reverend Mother after consuming a variety, the *Water of Life*.

At this instance one can understand the drastic change to the character Paul has encountered just few instances ago. Parker is what the more powerful do with their current power and fame. Declaring that he is not a hero but only a man looking for revenge. Calling himself the *Lisan al Gaib,* Paul rules over the Fremen Fedaykin, uses the nuclear weapons of House Atreides and swears vengeance on Baron Harknonethan and shaddam IV.

### The Final Confrontation

So, Paul first calls on Harkonnen and Shaddam for a final chilling confrontation, which Paul believes is never going to end.

The fierce duel between Paul and Feyd Rautha was advantageous for Paul. After defeating the emperor of the universe, Paul took control of the throne with the assistance of a marriage to princess Irulan.

This marriage however displeased Chani who was Pauls real love and left the planet of Arrakis in tears, which is a more realistic scenario than in Herbert’s novel. Paul then ensured that no one would oppose him ever again with a warning, the annihilation of the Spice. This leaves no option for Irulan and Shaddam IV but to agree to his demands making possible Paul’s crusade all over the galaxy to establish his rule firmly.

### An Open Ending

Villeneuve’s vision for the conclusion of *Dune: Part Two* is radical and is one that will be the cliffhanger for this segment of the series. Paul starts his war, his love Chani is left in an unknown place and space emperors rest on an undecided future. There are readers who are fond of Herbert’s work who are still waiting to see how these parts connect to the prequel as this seems to be the overall basis of the other books and films.

The struggle will be on when to seize Hermans control and questions about Irulan and his further plans. Given how things have developed though, Villeneuve will take his sweet time to release the final film since it is expected he foresaw how the trilogy ends.
