Surprisingly, The Brothers Sun Shuts Down Even With Great Reviews, Thanks to Michelle Yeoh
In what seems to be an unfortunate turn of events, Netflix has cancelled The Brothers Sun, one of their most anticipated series of 2024, despite the series receiving rave reviews and their innovative combination of genres. Starring Michelle Yeoh—who recently won an Academy Award for Everything Everywhere All at Once— the six-part series could not reach the high expectations in terms of viewers set by the platform and that sealed its doom.
Did The Brothers Sun Really Set?
Some people may be disappointed by the news but calm down; it is not as gloomy as it seems. At its peak, The Brothers Sun reached #6 on the Netflix weekly charts and remained there for five straight weeks. However, it would either me or you who say it’s unfortunate because it was still below the viewership figures expected on their competetive benchmarks. During that period, the series accumulated about 17.2 million views which other titles like Griselda breezed past four days into release.
Though critical acclaim and strong positive views from around 80% of Rotton Tomatoes, along with people who viewed the show were excited about its content, it was not enough. The series was an amalgamation of action, comedy, drama, and suspense, but not strong enough to generate a large audience.
Reactions from the Cast
It appears that many actors are still opting to voice their thoughts through social media platforms which has eve Justin Chien, the series’ lead actor, on the forums and such platforms expressing his disappointment with the cancellation of the series.
“I will need time to absorb this news, but I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for your love and support on this program.”
These overwhelming feelings motivated Chien to record his message, but many fans were also sorry of the unusual narrative style of the series.
Michelle Yeoh’s Battle with Television Shows
This unsurprising news is in addition to the recent trend of disappointments for Michelle Yeoh in the world of television. In her case, star power was not enough as her most recent installments struggled as follows:
- The Witcher: Blood Origin experienced poor reception.
- American Born Chinese was let go after just one season.
- Now, The Brothers Sun also adds to the list of shows that lasted an average of one season.
No Help in the Making
The very stringent rules from Netflix regarding the recovery of cancelled programs makes it very doubtful that The Brothers Sun will be picked anywhere else. For the time being, it terminates with season one, and only season one.
Conclusion
While The Brothers Sun had an interesting premise and impressive acting, the failure to attract large number of audiences points out the problems that even well received shows have in today’s over saturated streaming market.
For Michelle Yeoh and the crew, this closure is particularly sad as the show had all chances of blossoming into a terrific television package.
