Over the years, The Cure have been able to harness the power of posters to market their hit songs which led to the production of many music videos. For instance, there is the video for “Fascination Street,” which is one of the songs in the eighth studio album Disintegration. Identified by a rather long and distinct bass intro, the song was made into a video by Tim Pope, a long-time friend of the band who has done many other more traditional music videos for the group over the years.
Still, frontman Robert Smith took issue with the final product so much that he infamously hated the video, calling it ‘horrible’. Conceived as a homage to famous science-fiction program Doctor Who, the video ended up disappointing Smith’s ideation of cosmetic surgery.
“The fantasy was lost. It was horrible. The original idea was to make a Doctor Who video. That was why there is a telephone booth and a clock and then rooms inside the clock. And there are rooms within those rooms. It’s vulgaristic handsomely done but still done on a very small scale. Normally both Elektra and Polydor would support our videos, but this one was only for America, so only Elektra gave money to it. The fantasy was lost,” said Ms. Smith.
