Blur marked their debut with the release of the album Leisure on August 27, 1991. The reception by critics was rather favorable; however, tracks like “She’s So High” and ”There’s No Other Way” soon cast the British group into the limelight. Still, frontman Damon Albarn has some ambivalence feeling about the album.
Albarn gave an interview to Guitar Center Sessions. He once described the development of the band’s debut album Leisure, stating “Well, that wasn’t a particularly happy experience. But let me try as hard as I can. It was such a big deal that I think, looking back, we were too compliant with our elders.” Photo: Food Records Blur – Photo: Food Records Blur.
“Of course, it was commerce and there was a procedure. You did not simply walk in there because you alone were hungry. Save yourself the misery and embarrassment. There are very few people in the music business that can be described as pure fantasy.”
Ten years down the line, anyone who mentions Albarn will always picture him being sympathetic to grime. He was blunt when he called Leisure “horrible.” Seemingly, “I have made many, many mistakes, many, many mistakes, I have made two bad records, the oscar-winning stars in my crown i mean the first record which is horrifying fifty-thousand, fifty thousand great escape from conception of two thousand five which reasonably was not a good idea.”
