Robert Smith is not someone who has ever shied away from stating his hatred vivid music. In due course, The Cure frontman has revealed his likes and dislikes towards the music along with the stars. There were some artists whom he admired, but he had no qualms showing even the most tactful contempt towards others including stereotypical Queen like copyist bands.
Smith spoke without ambiguity. In a 2004 interview with Rolling Stone: “Well, that is no statement I can agree with. I never liked Queen. I mean it to the point of also saying I hated Queen. While it’s legit to revive such an environment. Hence The Darkness I do like but this isn’t a great band. It’s a comedy band.” What is visually and musically similar about The Darkness to Queen’s aesthetic elements, however, is complete divergence from the Cure’s more somber and brooding treatment to their ‘bangers’.
In addition to this, he has also lashed out at other performers such as Morrissey. He was quoted saying, “If Morrissey said not to eat meat then I will eat meat. That’s how much I hate Morrissey.” He has also taken aim at Duran Duran, saying rather disrespectfully: “They stood for all that we hated: all the glamor of the 80’s, the consumerism crap, the whole awful circus we were against.
